How (Should) Journalists Use Social Media

NOTES:

Lisa's presentation

Smart journalists are finding great stories from people they’ve never met, 140 characters at a time. This panel will discuss how social media tools are giving journalists a wider, more immediate reach into what’s happening, and what people are saying about it.

Kirk LaPointe is a media manager who has played a lead role in transforming his newspaper into a newsroom offering all-day, web-first multimedia content.

Lisa Johnson is a reporter who uses tools like twitter every day as a “social scanner” to get story ideas and new viewpoints on the issues she covers.

As the title suggests, we’ll dig into the “ought” of this newish territory, and how it’s changing the journalist’s relationship to the community.

It should be interesting to anyone who follows the news, has a cause/client to pitch, or who has been surprised by a Facebook message from a reporter.

Kirk's Bio

Former roles: Head of CTV News, Editor in Chief and Associate Publisher of The Hamilton Spectator, Founding Executive Editor of National Post, Editor in Chief and General Manager of Southam News, Ottawa Bureau Chief and General News Editor of The Canadian Press, Host on CBC Newsworld.

About Lisa Johnson

Lisa Johnson is a storyteller, reporting daily for CBC News Vancouver, on television and radio, specializing in environmental issues.

Before journalism, she used to pipette DNA and observe fish mating dances as a biologist. That makes her a geek for all kinds of things that many journalists dislike, including animal carcasses and math.

She tweets regularly @lisasj and blogs occasionally at lisa-johnson.ca .
